“Uh-huh, Uh-huh, Yo, Yo…”

January slide show #2

With promises of “oh you won’t fall in” and “you’ll be fine” each of these non-swimmers (at the time) trusted their parents and hopped onto this here hot dog.  Five minutes later, after the boat made what would be a fatal turn, all three were dunked into the cold lake, crying and even screaming for help.

We all felt bad.  I personally hated to hear my son’s description of being under the water and how he could kinda see the sky and a fuzzy greenish light (“How deep in the water were you?!” I wondered).  He popped up and paddled towards us.  Then, I jumped in, mainly because I could hear the girls crying but I could not see them.  Turns out they had a death grip on the handles and would not let go of the now up-side-down hot dog, which, I tried to explain, only made it worse as they were being dragged through the water.  Logic did not prevail.

Meanwhile, Chunk #1 swam towards the boat, got in, and just yelled and cried.  I guess he was mad.  I’m not sure what he said cause I was still trying to pry the cold clutching fists off the handles and urge the girls towards the boat.

Funny, but not funny.  The picture makes me laugh because they had no idea what was ahead.

I still feel guilty when I remember that. Kids are resilient, right? Right!?

Yes! In fact I showed the picture to Chunk #1 to see his reaction and he just casually said “oooooh, I remember!” and then he remembered crying….and then he remembered swimming back to the boat. So, it’s all good…..I still feel guilty, too.

  2. Love the slide show idea! And I like the idea of being underwater, he makes it sound so…poetic. 🙂

PS: Let’s meet up sometime in January for our writer’s group, what do ya say??
